Description:

OSMUN LATROBE
(1835-1915) Confederate lieutenant colonel on the staff of James Longstreet. War-date fine association manuscript L.S. ‘O Latrobe' 1p. 8vo., ‘Head Quarters 1. Army Corps', Dec. 20, 1864, to Gen. Joseph B. Kershaw, relieving Gen. Robert F. Hoke's division at daylight. Kershaw (1822 - 1894) directed Morris Island in the bombing of Fort Sumter, commanded a brigade at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, and was captured at Sayler's Creek. Hoke (1837-1912) was present at Big Bethel, where he was commended for coolness and judgment. Wounded at Chancellorsville, he recovered in time for the defense of Petersburg and Richmond. His brigade distinguished itself at Cold Harbor which was acknowledged by Grant as his most costly defeat. In December 1864, Hoke was in North Carolina to defend the state from a Union strike and attempt to capture Fort Fisher. The first battle began on December 24, just four days after this letter. Fading to ‘adversity' ink of the text of the letter but Latrobe's signature is strong. Very good condition.
