Description:

ORNATE SILK VEST ATTRIBUTED TO GEN. WILHELM FRIEDRICH VON STEUBEN
A very ornate and attractive large embroidered silk vest attributed to Continental; Army Gen. Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben and descended in his family until purchased in a Pennsylvania auction in the 1980s. This ca. late 1700s vest once belonged to a man of wealth and fine taste: it bears ornate embroidered images of flowers, vines and fountains, and the nine original buttons, all still present, are embroidered upon their faces as well. The silk front is backed in cotton. The rear of the vest is muslin and was later fitted with two ties on each side allowing the piece to be placed upon a mannequin or worn without undoing the many front buttons. This vest is cut for a large man of tall stature and weighing at least two hundred pounds - dimensions matching those of von Steuben late in life. The vest is accompanied by some genealogical notes, etc. in the hand of Mina von Steuben obtained in the same auction with the vest, along with research tying the woman to her famous antecedent and original and copy of letters of provenance are also included. The vest shows a few frayed spots and some slight soiling but is in generally excellent condition.
