(1810 - 1862) Union major general and astronomer, Commander of the Department of the South, died at Beaufort of yellow fever. Scarce A.L.A. 1p. oblong 8vo., "Cincinnati Obs[ervatory]", Oct. 28, 1848, to an unnamed gentleman with regard to samples of his astronomical journal "Sidereal Messenger". In part: "...I have directed my agent to send you Nos. 1 and 2, Vol. III of my journal as a specimen. In case it suits you the back volumes can be obtained. For some time the Journal will be issued only once in two months...". In very good condition.
