Description:

(1810 - 1862) Union major general and astronomer, Commander of the Department of the South, died at Beaufort of yellow fever. Fine association war-date A.L.S., ‘Head Quarters 3rd Division Camp Andrew Jackson, March 3rd, 1862, to Brigadier General Don Carlos Buell. Mitchel explains that while in Edgefield he directed a Mr. Larue to the Acting Division Commissary to sell his sugar and molasses, which was bought. In part: ‘...gave to William Larue a certificate...as we had no funds in the Division, I endorsed this account, asking its payment in Louisville...declines to pay...refer this matter to your decision...' Signed as brigadier general at the conclusion. Appearing on the verso is the endorsement of Buell's Chief of Staff, JAMES B. FRY (1827-1894) Union brigadier general and Chief of Staff to McDowell and Buell, with the latter at Shiloh, deciding that the commissary will pay for the groceries. Very good.
