Description:

ORMSBY M. MITCHEL
(1810 - 1862) Union major general and astronomer, Commander of the Department of the South, died at Beaufort of yellow fever. War-date A.L.S., ‘O. M. Mitchel', 2pp. 4to., Camp Andrew Jackson, Mar. 15, 1862, in part: ‘…Frederick received your letter giving us the sad news of Harry's relapse and severe illness. All the gentlemen associated with me and connected with my staff have been most unfortunate but Harry & Mr. Williams have been the greatest sufferers - I have already exhausted all the influence I possess and all the means in my power to procure for those who were appointed by Gov Dennison in the 45th Regt, their just pay, but without avail, my own brother is among the sufferers and he has nothing but what he can earn to support his family…It is the greatest piece of injustice ever perpetrated with my knowledge. I have supposed that you could procure for Harry a commission in the Reg. Army and he write you – some months since – with the present Gov. of Ohio I have no acquaintance and of course no influence…' Some show through, otherwise very good.
