ORIGINAL VINTAGE MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS
A fine collection of 40 original holograph music, hymns, songs and scores, each penned by the composer on lined music manuscript letterhead and dating from ca. 1866-1894. The collection was ably catalogued by the original collector and a full list of music is available. That said, some notable examples include: ‘The Soldiers Prayer' by WILLIAM A. KING, notable for its popularity during the Civil War and World War I, when it was apparently sung by Theodore Roosevelt; ‘Haven (Jesus Cover My Soul)' by WILLIAM U. BUTCHER (1829-1910), prolific American author of hymns; ‘God is Love' by GEORGE C. STEBBINS (1846-1945), American evangelical composer of gospels who worked with Dwight D. Moody and Ira Sankey; ‘Walk in the Light' by WILLIAM A. OGDEN (1841-1887) American soldier composer of hymns, served with the 30th Indiana Vols. and established a male choir, which became popular in the Army of the Cumberland; ‘On Thee My Heart is Resting' by BENJAMIN C. UNSELD (1943-1923), American composer of gospels; ‘Saviour Blessed Saviour' and ‘Stewart' by AUGUSTA BROWNE (1820-1882), American singer and prolific composer, writing over 200 works before 1870; ‘Responses After Commandments' by ALBERT J. HOLDEN (1841-1916), American organist and composer; ‘Happy Israel' by SIMEON B. MARSH (1798-1875), American organist and composer of cantatas; ‘Leaning On The Everlasting Arms' with text by Elisha Hoffman, by ANTHONY J. SHOWALTER (1858-1924), American composer of gospels. ‘Leaning…' is his best-known song, prominently featured in the 2010 film ‘True Grit'; ‘Behold The Lovely Spring-Time' by HUBERT P. MAIN (1839-1935), American composer of hymns and a founder of Bigelow & Main publishing house. He also partnered with Evangelist Dwight D. Moody and Ira D. Sankey; ‘Lullaby' by HERRMAN S. SARONI (1824-1900), German-born American composer who studied under Mendelssohn; ‘Prince and Lord of Glory' by CARYL FLORIO (1843-1920) born William J. Robjohn, he was an English-born American composer, organist and actor; ‘Family Stand' by JOHN BUNYAN HERBERT (1852-1927), American gospel composer and colleague of George F. Root; ‘Munson's 6th Double' by N. COE STEWART (1838-1921), American composer and director of music for the Cleveland School District, where helped the transition from singing school tune-books to the use of graded classroom curriculum; and many others. Most are in very good condition, with some bearing tape repairs and slight fold tears. Worthy of further research!
