Lot 88
88. ORIGINAL USS MONITOR DECK PLANS FROM 1862 Rare and historic war-date draftsmen's rendering of the USS Monitor, sketched just one week after her historic battle with the CSS Merrimac, 1p. 4to., drawn by an unknown French observer, March 15, 1862, and showing the novel craft. At the center of the document her starboard side is shown while anchored with the gun turret pointed at the viewer. At the top, her deck plan is laid out, and at bottom, a view from her aft shows looks into the interior of the turret with a finely detailed profile depicting one of the vessel's two large Parrot guns. Interestingly, within weeks of this sketch, the pilothouse shown was replaced with a sloped design after the original was damaged by a hit from a shell during the battle. Also, one of the gun turrets was enlarged to accommodate a larger cannon. Professionally backed and repaired for preservation with some negligible stains and soiling, else very good.
