Description:

Very rare photo album containing 27 original photographs from the arrest of the leaders of the Flensburg Government - the short-lived Nazi government formed after the suicide of Adolf Hitler, in which Karl Donitz headed the German state for just three weeks. The photographs, each 6.5 x 4.75 in., bear extraordinary content about the government's dissolution and the arrest of its members. Notable examples include: three images of the corpse of Hans-Georg von Friedeburg, the second-to-last Commander-in-Chief of the Kriegsmarine, who committed suicide at the prospect of being strip-searched at the surrender; an image of Karl Donitz and other leaders before being transported by the Allies, their bags tossed behind a truck; an image of a forlorn Alfred Jodl in an Allied Jeep after his capture; numerous images of the government's leaders lined up by British troops, with their hands over their heads; three images of officials and staff of the Flensburg headquarters, each held by British bayonet-point; and many others. These photographs are mostly removed from the album, though in fine condition by themselves. The images were likely taken by an unidentified British war correspondent, as one of the images still secured in the album shows a war correspondent conversing with a man in a suit, presumably a British official before the arrest. Many are docketed in pencil on the verso. Fine condition.
