Description:

A good content teletype from the Government of Japan to the Allies, regarding the relinquishing of various Pacific islands from Japanese control just weeks before the Instrument of Surrender was signed. This teletype, 27 x 8.5 in., undated yet certainly sent August 1945, was sent to various Allied departments, all coded, including Ft. Shafter, Hawaii - the headquarters of the U.S. Army Forces, Pacific Ocean Areas. The message reads: 'THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE HAS BEEN RECEIVED FROM THE JAPANESE...FROM THE JAPANESE HEADQUARTERS...WE UNDERSTAND AS FOLLOWS...JEHOL PROVINCE IS INCLUDED IN MANCHURIA...YORON ISLAND OF THE RYUKYU ISLANDS AND THE AMAMI ISLANDS ARE INCLUDED IN THE MAIN ISLANDS OF JAPAN...THE BAUYAN ISLANDS AND THE BASHI ISLANDS ARE INCLUDED IN THE PHILIPPINE ISLAN [sic]...THE JAPANESE FORCES IN NEW GUINEA CMA ['comma'] BISMARCKS AND THE SOLOMONS UNDER AUSTRALIAN MANDATE SHALL NEGOTIATE WITH THE COMMANDI GENERAL AUSTRALIAN FORCES...THE JAPANESE FORCES ON THE ISLANDS OFF THE NORTHERN COAST OF AUSTRALIA OTHER THAN THOSE MENTIONED ABOVE SHALL NEGOTIATE WITH THE SOUTHEAST ASIA COMMAND...REFERRING TO THE LATTER PART OF YOUR RADIOGRAM OF TWO SEVEN AUGUST CONCERNING CONTAC [sic] BETWEEN DESIGNATED JAPANESE AND ALLIED COMMANDERS CMA THE JAPANESE GENERAL HEADQUARTERS HAD ALREADY TAKEN NECESSARY STEPS...IT IS REQUESTED THAT YOUR INSTRUCTIONS TO THEM BE COMMUNICATED THROUGH THE JAPANESE GENERAL HEADQUARTERS AS COMMUNICATION FACILITIES...ARE SO INADEQUATE THAT IT IS HARDLY POSSIBLE FOR THE LOCAL JAPANESE COMMANDER TO ESTABLISH FROM HIS SIDE DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE DESIGNATED ALLIED COMMANDER... 'After being received, these teletypes were later decoded and mimeographed for further distribution. Very good condition. This lot was taken from a large number of teletypes brought home by Charles F. Hoff, a 'cryptographic message center officer' stationed at Headquarters Army Forces Middle Pacific, charged with sending and receiving messages from Washington to the Pacific, as well as coding and decoding classified documents. Consigned by a direct linear descendant, and sold with a photocopy of a letter of provenance delivered from our consigner to our offices.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
