Description:

A good content coded teletype from the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers Douglas MacArthur to various Allied command posts, announcing plans for the transport of Japanese delegates to the Philippines for preliminary peace talks. The teletype, 8.5 x 25 in., reads in part: 'FOLLOWING MESSAGE HAS BEEN RECEIVED FROM THE JAPANESE GENERAL HEADQUARTERS...SCHEDULE OF OUR PLANES MOVEMENT REGARDING OUR REPRESENTATIVE APOSTROPHE SUGAR [representative's] FLIGHT TO MANILA...THE PARTY WILL EMPLOY TWO UNARMED TWIN-ENGINED CMA SINGLE WINGED LAND ATTACK PLANES OF THE TYPE ONE...WITH MARKINGS AS DESIGNATED BY YOU PD WEATHER PERMITTING...THE PLANES WILL LEAVE KISARAZU AIRDROME ON THE NINETEENTH...PASS OVER SATA MISAKI ON THE SOUTHERN TIP OF KYUSHU AT ABOUT ONE...AND THEN PROCEED VIA NAKANOSHIMA CMA TAKARAJIMA AND TORIJIMA...REACHING IE SHIMA AT ABOUT ONE THREE TWO NAUGHT ON THE SAME DAY...' After being received, these teletypes were later decoded and mimeographed for further distribution; a mimeograph of this teletype is included in this lot. Very good condition. A sixteen-man Japanese surrender delegation did arrive in Manila from Ie Shima (an island off the northwest coast of Okinawa) on Aug. 19, 1945, as suggested here, at which MacArthur sped preliminary talks to assure a quick cessation of all hostilities and arrange an early signing of the surrender. This lot was taken from a large number of teletypes brought home by Charles F. Hoff, a 'cryptographic message center officer' stationed at Headquarters Army Forces Middle Pacific, charged with sending and receiving messages from Washington to the Pacific, as well as coding and decoding classified documents. Consigned by a direct linear descendant, and sold with a photocopy of a letter of provenance delivered from our consigner to our offices.
