Description:

ORDER OF THE GERMAN EAGLE, FIFTH CLASS WITH SWORDS
Scarce award given to a very prominent Hungarian pilot of World Wars I & II, ERNEST OJTOZY (1897 - ?). Information on this man is scarce, but we do know that he received two Orders of the German Eagle (sold elsewhere in this sale) but fled to England on or before 1944. Offered here is Ojtozy's Order of the German Eagle, this cross being the 1943 Fifth Class version, 50 mm wide x 60 mm high, including suspension ring. Complete with a neck ribbon that is 45 mm wide, the cross is stamped with a ‘900' for silver content, and also marked with a ‘21', indicating manufacture by the Berlin jeweler firm of Gebr. Godet & Co. Both marks appear on the reverse side of the suspension ring. Additionally, cross is marked on the top left edge of the suspension ring 'fan' with a stamped number '5' indicating that this particular medal is a 5th Class award. Identical to the 1939 First Class version in every way, with the exception of this stamped number '5' on the suspension ring fan. With an ornamental bow tie, which is part of a sash. The Order of the German Eagle was a diplomatic and honorary award given to prominent foreigners, particularly diplomats, who were considered sympathetic to Nazism, while the addition of swords would indicate the award to a military figure. The Order was instituted by Adolf Hitler on May 1, 1937 and ceased to be awarded following the collapse of the Nazi government. Among its recipients were Henry Ford and the president of General Motors. A textbook example in fine condition, with the enamel completely intact, a very attractive piece overall.
