Description:

British 18-karat gold medal, approx. 1 ½" x 2", weighing exactly one ounce, the badge of a Companion of the Order of the Bath, Civil Division. The double-sided medal depicts three crowns, with a rose, thistle and shamrock emanating from a scepter, all surrounded by an oval border bearing the motto: "TRIA JUNCAT IN UNO" ("Three Joined in One"). Both sides bear the hallmark of London jeweler James Garrard, while the obverse further bears a duty mark depicting a profile of Queen Victoria, a London assay office mark in the form of a panther's head, and the date hallmark "M", indicating manufacture in 1887. The reverse bears purity marks depicting a crown beside the gold content "18". The medal is topped with a gold suspension ring, also bearing purity marks depicting a crown beside the gold content "18". A maroon silk neck ribbon with brass clasp is fitted to this ring. This ribbon shows push-pin holes from previous display, otherwise the medal is in fine condition. The Most Honorable Order of the Bath was founded by George I in 1725, and is the third-most senior active British Order of Chivalry, after the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Thistle. The Order was split into Military and Civil divisions in 1847, opening membership to civil servants. This medal originates from the family of hero of Trafalgar Admiral Sir William Hargood, through the collection of Valmore Forgett, Jr.
