Description:

ORDER BOOK OF THE 7TH MASSACHUSETTS INFANTRY
Excellent order book of the 7th Massachusetts Volunteers, approx. 200pp. 10 x 15.5 in., covering the period from Sep. 6, 1861 to Mar. 25, 1863 and filled with all of the General Orders and Special Orders issued during that period. During the war, they were first based in Washington constructing defensive works at Fort Stevens under command of Gen. Darius Couch. Leaving Fort Stevens on March 11, 1862, the regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and was shipped via Washington to Fortress Monroe. The regiment saw its first combat during the Battle of Williamsburg and suffered light casualties. During the Peninsular Campaign, the regiment took part in the Battle of Fair Oaks and the Battle of Oak Grove. After the failure of the Peninsular Campaign, the regiment withdrew with the rest of the Army of the Potomac to Fortress Monroe and on August 31, they were shipped to northern Virginia. Much fascinating content as to the workings of a Union regiment during the war. Content includes basic instructions for establishment of a hospital, issuance of passes, sutlers, marching, field gear, promotions and resignations, etc. More interesting entries (and there are many) include punishment for being AWOL: '...stand upon a barrel under charge of a guard for as long a time as their unauthorized absence...'; sloppiness at roll call; no shouting at the time of arrival at mess; officers to be held for unruly behavior of their men; men going AWOL being allowed to walk out of the guardhouse, marches at 2:00 AM; lengthy lists of dozens of men going AWOL and being sentenced to carry logs for a full day, carry balls and chains for 20 days, fed bread and water, stand on a barrel for hours, handcuffed and tied to a tree, fined, etc.; announcing names of shirkers at the battles of Fair Oaks and Seven Pines; and much more. Covers loosening and somewhat damaged, contents are fine.
