Description:

OPERATION MARKET GARDEN SHRAPNEL-STRUCK GERMAN HELMET
A "dug" German helmet recovered in the area of Groesbeck, Holland, scene of some of the heaviest fighting during Montgomery's ill-fated 1944 Operation Market Garden. The heavily-oxidized helmet was dug at "Jansburg Woods" east of the American lines near Groesbeck. The helmet also bears a 1" sharp-edged hole at left-front, consistent with being penetrated with a piece of shrapnel. On Sept. 17 1944, the 505th P.I.R. made its fourth combat jump at Groesbeck, Holland. During the fierce combat, two lightly armed platoons of the 505th, at most 80 men, were surrounded by an entire German Infantry Battalion supported by tanks. The paratroopers fought back three savage German assaults and held their ground until relieved. For this action the 505th received a second Presidential unit citation. From the personal collection of World War II and Civil War historian Michael Miner. Miner's thirty-year collection was built through an extensive system of contacts he developed with artifact hunters and diggers in Europe and the Far East, and he maintained careful records of the items he amassed.
