Description:

OPERATING KEY-WOUND KRIEGSMARINE WALL CLOCK
Kriegsmarine clock believed to have been intended for, or removed from, a German U-Boat. The clock, which shows obvious signs of extended use, 6" silver face with Arabic numerals, a German eagle with swastika above the letter "M" at left, with serial number "8868 M" at right. The clock bears the second hand which is often removed from these clocks. A weathewrproof hinged glass cover is present, the glass bearing a very small stress crack at bottom. The brass case, 3 1/2" deep, has been screwed onto a fitted and finished teak base, undoubtedly of period construction. Keys to both open the clock's face and to wind the clock are both present. But for the aforementioned crack and wear from use, the clock and base are in very good condition. A ca. 1970s note included reads: "Taken from Nazi submarine base in a mountain cave Le Havre France 1944". Although we know of no such base, Le Havre was used as a port by U-b and E-boats, some of which were captured there at war's end. Cliffs surrounding the ports may also have been used to store Kriegsmarine supplies later in the war. An increasing rare - and desireable - Third Reich timepiece.
