Description:

(1886 - 1970) Belgian major general and Deputy Chief of Staff, surrendered Belgium to the Germans following the hard-fought Battle of Lys. Superb content A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Brussels, Jan. 30, 1960 in French, describing the surrender of Belgium and the scene surrounding a photo he has signed (included). In part: '...It was taken at the Chateau d'Anvaing...at my arrival on May 28, 1940 at about 9 o'clock in the morning...The 27th in the afternoon the King decided to make establish contact between the military authorities...to cease hostilities against the Belgian army...there was not a single company left in reserve...There was no use hoping for the Allies who were withdrawing towards Dunkirk. Their front was pierced at two places...in 1,700 kilometers there were 800,000 refugees...it was I whom the King charged with the mission...' So as not to discourage those still holding against the Germans advancing on Dunkirk, the general relates that he passed through the lines quietly. He was met by Gen. Paulus, Colonel von Bechtolsheim, and Gen. von Reichenau who signed on behalf of Hitler. He closes his letter describing the fates of those to whom he surrendered. Fine. Sold with a 5 x 7 in. photo of Derousseaux arriving to sign the surrender, which he has signed in block letters, adding the location and date of surrender. Two pieces.
