Description:

OLIVER WOLCOTT, JR.
(1760-1833) Secretary of the Treasury and Governor of Connecticut. A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., New York, May 25, 1881, to a Chinese tea merchant. Wolcott writes to report on the sale of tea on his correspondent's behalf, in part: "... I have now the pleasure of transmitting to you an account of sales and account current balance in your favour ... although your consignment has provided less profit than I at one time expected, yet I assure you that every exertion has been made for your advantage ... I think it but just to claim from you an allowance on a part of the two hundred & fifty boxes of Hyson Tea, purchased of you by my agents ... More than one half of this parcel of Teas was on hand when Mr. Bull returned to this country, & he can inform you of its very inferior quality..." Signed boldly on the verso, to which a second hand has added his titles. Mounting remnants at the left edge, minor foxing from age, else very good.
