OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES, JR. (1841-1935) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1902-1932) known for his vigorous opinions, often in dissent, a narrow constructionist and advocate of legislative prerogative, promulgator of the "clear and present danger" test for freedom of speech. Pair of signed items, includes and A.L.S. "Oliver Wendell Holmes," 1p. mourning stationery, 4 1/2" x 7", Beverly Farms, July 10, 1888 to noted sculptor WILLIAM ORDWAY PARTRIDGE (1861-1930). In full: "How many thanks I owe you for the kind expressions of your brief letter! I passed through Siena [Italy] in 1835 and only remember the Zebra-stripes on the front of the cathedral. Little did I think that my name would ever reach so far as that, and I cannot help being pleased at finding I have a reader and a grateful one in that most ancient and venerable city. I thank you again for taking the trouble to tell me I have." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, which Holmes has addressed in his own hand and signed in the lower left corner, "O. W. Holmes,"the postage stamp excised. Two pieces.
