(1841-1935) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1902-1932) known for his vigorous opinions, often in dissent, a narrow constructionist and advocate of legislative prerogative, promulgator of the "clear and present danger" test for freedom of speech. Rare war-date, partly-printed Manuscript D.S. "O.W. Holmes, Jr." as Officer of the Day, 2pp. folio, Camp Massasoit, [Massachusetts], Aug. 8, [n.y. but ca. 1861, a page from the routine duty roster. While guarding fellow Union prisoners, Holmes takes his turn the prisoners and learning the functions of a regiment headed for the war, with many names listed. Very good.
