OLIVER ELLSWORTH (1745 - 1807) American politician, delegate to the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Fine association manuscript D.S. with the "right" date, 1p. 8vo., Hartford, June 29, 1776 (five days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence), an order that Capt JEHIEL MEIGS be paid 172 pounds to be used to enlist a company "for the Continental Service", signed by Ellsworth at Bottom and by Meigs on verso. In April, 1775, Meigs served as ensign in the 1st Conn. Regt., a company that marched from Connecticut in the Lexington Alarm, and he later served as captain at Ticonderoga, New York, and Trenton. Very good.
