OHIO "SQUIRREL HUNTERS" RIDE THE RAILS FOR FREE
Pair on interesting documents concerning the Ohio "Squirrel Hunters", locals mobilized by the governor in September, 1862 to counter a perceived invasion of Ohio following the defeat of a 15,000 man Federal force at Richmond, Ky. The first item is a manuscript L.S. by MONTGOMERY MEIGS as Quartermaster General, 1p 4to., Washington, May 1, 1863, to the president of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Rail Road: "…You will please forward the claims of your company for transportation of the 'Squirrel Hunters' during the raid into Kentucky…". The second item is an L.S. on letterhead of the Little Miami & Columbus & Xenia Railroad Co., 1p. 4to., Dec. 3, 1863 from the company auditor to the secretary of another railroad: "…it would seem that our 'Squirrel Hunter' claims are very doubtful - What do you say to our withdrawing them from our earnings until that are actually paid?…". Two pieces.
