Description:

OHIO "SQUIRREL HUNTER'S" DISCHARGE
An interesting printed document with detailed vignette of a hunter stalking a squirrel 10" x 8" (trimmed), titled: "Squirrel Hunter's Discharge", Sept. 1862, an honorable discharge for John W. Taylor signed in text by David Tod, Governor of Ohio and holographically signed by CHARLES W. HILL, Adjutant General of Ohio. The "Squirrel Hunters" were civilian volunteers who assisted Union troops from Confederate attack in 1862. So important was their assistance in the defense of Cincinnati that in 1863 the Ohio legislature authorized funds to print these discharges honoring the men for their patriotism. Light scattered foxing, toned, very good.
