Description:

OFFICERS AND ENLISTED MEN ARE SPLIT IN 1864 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
War-date Union surgeon''s letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Surgeon William L. Faxon, 32nd Mass. Vols., City Point, Va., Oct. 16, 1864, addressed to Col. and BBG Francis J. Parker, in part: "…the regiment has made many inquires out you and…both officers and men fall. I hear Edmands [BBG Joseph Cushing Edmands] has been promoted. I wonder who will be major. Shepard! [Edward Olcott Shepard] I saw a letter from Kingsbury [Adjutant Isaac Franklin Kingsbury]…he has not acted fairly by the regiment as his first promotion was that he might be adjutant. I don''t think he is a worthy successor of [Lt. Charles K.] Cobb. Hoyt [Lt. Isaiah Francis Hoyt] must make a good one. His pluck is unquestioned and his endorsements [is] there is no field officer to question. Brains have gone since ''62…how many majority will McClellan have for the presidency. The soldiers of the [army] vote against him, even [the] 5th Corps. The officers are for him. I had a good time down the James and at Fort Monroe…Mrs. F. is quite well and I guess contented. I am building a log house 42 x 14 feet, room enough…isn''t it?…no firing on the picket lines of any account, rebs and Yanks making friendships…the fighting will be over in a year and the south whipped…W. L. Faxon." Minor toning, else VG
