Description:

OFFICER'S KU KLUX KLAN ROBE FROM ROBERT E. SCOGGIN BRANCH, SOUTH CAROLINA
A ca. 1960s officer's robe and hood from the small but notorious South Carolina group headed by Grand Dragon Robert E. Scoggin. This group is notable for its unique use of silk-like robes with a silkscreened, rather than embroidered, blood drop patch. The robe is striped for officer rank, and original hood bears no mask per Klan regulation. Original stiffener included, as is cotton rope belt. Robert E. Scoggin (1922-2003) joined the Klan in 1953 and became Grand Dragon in South Carolina in 1962. By 1969, however, Scoggin had lost his position as United Klan grand dragon while serving in Federal prison for contempt of Congress. He then found himself at odds with current Klan leadership, which he blamed for the organization's decline, and was arrested on Sept. 17, 1970 for his part in a confrontation near Sumter with other Klan leaders. Scoggin resigned from the ‘Invisible Empire' in 1973. Exhibits moderate to significant foxing and staining throughout; nonetheless, a complete uniform from a notable group.
