Description:

NUREMBERG TYPESCRIPT OF ARTHUR SEYSS-INQUART INTERROGATION
An original lengthy English type script from Dutch war correspondent Arie de Gooyer who was present at the Nuremberg Trials. The typescript is 38pp. legal folio, Nuremberg, June 10, 1946, containing the text of the examination by defense attorney Dr. Gustav Steinbauer (1889-1961) of Austrian Nazi Arthur Seyss-Inquart (1892-1946). The questioning begins mostly with biographical information but eventually touches on Seyss-Inquart's views and role in the Anschluss. Some of his statements read, in part: '...I think that the great effect that the Party scored in Austria was due to its irrevocable will to attain the Anschluss...We in Austria in 1933 observed that there was at once the removal of the discrimination of the Versailles Treaty in the Reich, and secondly the end of unemployment...I must add, the 25th of July [1934] was the worst possible thing that could have happened to the Anschluss...' and much more. Toned with edgewear throughout. Accompanied by de Gooyer's personal pocket bible containing a handwritten inscription. The mention of July 25th, 1934 refers to the attempted coup to overthrow the Austrian Government by the Austrian Nazi Party. While the coup was ultimately a failure, Nazis still managed to assassinate Austrian Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss. Seyss-Inquart would be found guilt of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg Tribunal and was executed.
