Description:

(NUREMBERG TRIALS) ROLF WARTENBERG ARCHIVE (24)
ROLF WARTENBERG (1912-1996) German immigrant who served in the US Army and later as a key figure in the Nuremberg trials. Wartenberg fled Germany for San Salvador in late 1938 and immigrated to the United States in 1940. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served with the Seventh Army Interrogation Center in 1944 and 1945, as executive officer of the Bodyguards of the Allied Judges and Prosecutors at the International Tribunal in Nuremberg in 1946. Wartenberg also personally escorted Hermann Goring after his arrest. At Nuremberg, he served as Senior Interrogator for the Chief of Counsel for War Crimes on the Einsatzgruppen case. An important grouping of 24 documents, photos, and letters all related to Wartenberg, his efforts to leave Germany, letters of recommendation, and more. Included is: a 2.5 x 3.5 in. original candid photograph of HERMANN GORING taken at the time of his surrender; the Department of Justice letter admitting Wartenberg as a permanent resident; notice to report for enlistment medical review; draft notice; his passport photograph; vaccination certificate with Star of David, Berlin, 1938; two pre-war German driver's licenses with photographs; a note from a doctor authorized to treat Jews; his father's death certificate, German police certificate of good conduct; five letters of recommendation for Rold from the early 1930s; his letter of firing from Rudolf Karstadt in Bremen, 1933, citing the fact that he is a Jew and as such his emplyment would cause the firm hardship; and a copy of Nov. 22, 1938 declaration by the NSDAP concerning the Wartenberg's family business. It reads in part: '...Concern: De-Jewification of the company Wartenberg & Co. Berlin...Based on the purchase agreement of the previously Jewish company Wartenberg & Co. Berlin and Auerbach, which was concluded with the assistance of the DAF Gau Berlin and the Laundry Industry Specialist Group, the company is designated 'in the process of de-Jewification'
until final approval by the Reich Ministry of Economics. Since the Laundry Industry Specialist Group, the DAF Gau Administration Berlin, and I are in favor of this de-Jewification, approval from the R.W.H. is certainly to be expected. This letter is intended to provide all potential customers and suppliers, etc., with proof that the company is in the process of de-Jewification and is from now on no longer to be regarded as a Jewish enterprise...Heil Hitler!...' A fine, important archive of historical significance.
