Description:

A lengthy copy of the transcript from the sentencing of defendants in the Flick Trial, one of 12 subsequent military tribunals following the Nuremberg Trials aimed at leading industrialists of Nazi Germany. It was named for Friedrich Flick (1883-1972), German businessman, one of the richest men in the world at the time of his death. The transcript, 149pp. legal folio, December 22, 1947, commutes decisions and judgements for the defendants. In part: '...The President: Facing this Tribunal are private citizens of a conquered state being tried for alleged international crimes. Their judges are citizens of one of the victor states selected by its War Department. There may well be misgivings as to the fairness of such a trial...We cannot imagine that German law contains concepts more favorable to defendants...The indictment is in five counts. The first charges all six defendants, but in different capacities, with participation in the slave labor program of the Third Reich...second accuses all defendants except Terberger of spoilation of public and private property...In count three Flick Steinbrinck and Kalatsch are accused of crimes against humanity in compelling by means of anti-Semitic economic pressure the owners of certain industrial properties...the fourth count...Flick and Steinbrinck as members of the 'Keppler Circle'...with knowledge of its criminal activities contributed large sums to the financing of Die Schutzstaffeln...In the last count Steinbrinck's membership in the SS is claimed to incriminate him under the ruling...of it as a criminal organization...' and much more. File holes at the left margin, toning and scattered stains with some edge wear. Of the six individuals put on trial, only three were sentenced to prison time and it included time already served.
