Description:

EDMUND VEESENMAYER (1904-1977) High-ranking SS official and Holocaust perpetrator in Hungary and Croatia. Veesenmayer was a subordinate of Ernst Kaltenbrunner and Joachim von Ribbentrop, and worked with Adolf Eichmann. He was also involved in the establishment of the Ustase-run NDH puppet state following the April 1941 invasion of Yugoslavia, and in the selection and installation of the puppet regime of Milan Nedic in the German-occupied territory of Serbia. Lengthy copy of an interrogation transcript conducted by Dr. R.W. Kempner before the 'Ministries Trial,' one of 12 subsequent tribunals after the Nuremberg Trial aimed at ministers of various Reich ministries, 8pp. legal folio, Nuremberg, November 1, 1947, bearing good content about his role in the Nazi Party. In part: '...Q: When did you meet [Nazi financier and economic advisor Wilhelm] Keppler for the first time? Which year was that? A: That must have been in 1931...[he] came to Munich and I made his acquaintance. Q: That was a time when many people came to him with business matters...the forced assimilation of enterprises...his dealings with these matters grew gradually? A: He came with the commission he had received as Economic Commissioner of the Fuhrer...Q: If you look back on those years...what is your opinion of these today, with regard to all the occurrences, political events you took hand in? Would you do the same things again today? A: That is a very difficult question...One must look at the matters from their whole context...I was a working student, I was often hungry, I did not know what to live on...Q: Later when you rose to leading positions...did you never have any objections that this kind of policy would lead towards ruin?...did it not occur to you...Besides Germany there existed also other countries?...A: There is always some kind of faith in every movement. One must either believe in a mission or not...One cannot condemn something, looking at it from a limited angle only...Q: I wish to understand from a human viewpoint how someone who on the one hand has a very strong faith in the movement, but on the other hand is intelligent...how he got stuck that deep into this idea that he does not see...one cannot smash nations in this way. A: One must distinguish between two periods. The period up to the war and the period after the war...I did not agree with some details but that nevertheless I followed along as a whole...It drove us to the conflict of conscience...It was easier for me than for someone who was not a National Socialist...' and much more. Slightly toned towards the edges with some faded text, else fine. Wilhelm Keppler (1882-1960) was a close economic advisor of Hitler who helped finance the Nazi Party. Veesenmayer briefly worked in the Reich's economic office before being tasked with making nations such as Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, and Hungary subservient to Germany economically and physically. He played a key role in organizing and executing the Final Solution on Serbian and Hungarian Jewry. Originally sentenced to 20 years in prison for crimes against humanity, he was released after only two.
