Description:

NUREMBERG DEFENSE ATTORNEYS SEEK PROTECTION FROM THE PUBLIC
Excellent content D.S.signed by 28 Nuremberg defense attorneys and other legal representatives of the chief defendants of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, 1p. legal folio, Nuremberg, Aug. 2, 1945, addressed to the 'Nuremberg Military Tribunal'. The prosecutors, retained by the defendants and paid by the tribunal, ask that they be protected from 'threats to their honor and safety'. In part: '...The Tribunal has frequently taken the opportunity of affording individual Defence Counsels protection against unjustified attacks in the press...Abuse of this type...has recently grown more frequent, particularly in private mail to the Defense Counsels. The Defense Counsels will have to do without the protection of this Tribunal when the proceedings have closed. For this reason, the undersigned request that the Defense Counsels be given a statement at the close of the proceedings, to afford them legal protection, so that they are...not exposed, without protection, to unauthorised attacks with consequent attacks to their honor and safety, by reason of their faithful performance...' Signed at the bottom by approx. 31 defense attorneys and assistants, including those defending or representing the SS, Gestapo, Bormann, Schacht, Jodl, Robbentrop, Fritzsche, Exner, Donitz, von Papen, von Neurath, Streicher, Kaltenbrunner, Keitel, Frank (Servatius), Goring, Raeder, Rosenberg, Seyss-Inquart, and others. A contemporary key to the signatures and background information on each is sold with the lot. First page and bottom 15 signatures are mounted back-to-back, else very good. This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
