Description:

NUREMBERG CRIMINALS AT 'ASHCAN'
Excellent assemblage of signatures of future Nuremberg War Crimes Trials defendants, obtained when they were first interned at 'Ashcan', formally known as the Central Continental Prisoner of War Enclosure No. 32 and code-named 'Ashcan'. The facility was an Allied prisoner-of-war camp in the Palace Hotel of Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg and operating from May to August, 1945. It served as a processing station and interrogation center for the 86 most prominent surviving Nazi leaders prior to their trials in Nuremberg, including Hermann Goring and Karl Donitz. Offered here is a small autograph book containing 25 signatures of prominent internees, all obtained in July, 1945 and prior to the proceedings at Nuremberg. Of particular interest is the fact that most of the Germans signed adding their previous ranks or titles, as if they still possessed those distinctions. Among those signing are: MIKLOS HORTHY, FRANZ VON PAPEN, WALTHER DARRE, JOACHIM VON RIBBENTROP, FRANZ VON EPP, hERMANN gOERING (who adds 'Reichsmarshall Juli 1945'), WILHELM KEITEL, WALTER WARLIMONT, ALFRED JODL, EDMUND VON THERMANN, GRAF SCHWERIN VON KROSIGK, JULIUS STREICHER, HANS LAMMERS, ALBERT KESSELRING, WALTHER FUNK, FRANZ SELDTE, HANS FRANK, ROBERT LEY, ALFRED ROSENBERG, KARL DONITZ, HANS-JOACHIM REICKE, and a few others, unidentified. Sold with a 3 x 5 in. snapshot of five prisoners relaxing outdoors behind barbed wire, one possible Hermann Goring. Covers of book detached from contents, which are fine. While signers of the Nuremberg defendants while on trial are actually not rare, their signatures with ranks and government position prisoner and at Ashcan and excessively rare.
