Description:

NSDAP MEMBER ILLEGALLY HARASSES JEWS
Viennese police file, 31pp. 4to., documenting the arrest of Richard Hermann on Apr. 12, 1938. Hermann was hired by the NSDAP as a driver shortly after the Anschluss in March 1938, and given permission to use his vehicle for political propaganda purposes. He then used his position in the NSDAP to attempt to illegally search the rooms of other residents of his lodging house, at least one of whom is Jewish. The police report states, in part: "...On April 12, 1938 at one A.M., Hermann attempted an unauthorized search of a private residence... stated that he had an order from the NSDAP District 9 administration to operate a vehicle for the purpose of election propaganda... He also showed documentation from the NSDAP regional leadership that he was authorized to use the vehicle for this purpose... Attempted to search the house of the Jew Glasspiegel... attempting to find illegal materials... During the investigation, Hermann confessed that he had a personal dispute with Glasspiegel..." Witnesses claim Hermann attempted to search multiple houses as well. Hermann approached his landlord, Johann Eck, and stated that he was to search the house of cafe proprietor Strauss. Hermann was intoxicated, and did not give justification for his request. Strauss and Hermann argued. Present in the file are witness statements from Strauss and Eck, as well as the document from the local NSDAP authorizing Hermann to operate his vehicle, which of course says nothing about conducting searches. Also present is Hermann''s own statement, which states that he was drunk and does not remember anything from the night in question, apart from his arrest. The file also contains Hermann''s booking and initial hearing documents, a pledge signed by him stating he will not travel until the case is resolved, and documents showing that the charges against him, including attempted blackmail, were dropped after he had spent three days in prison. A very interesting look into life in Austria at the moment of domination by the Nazis. Very good.
