Description:

NSDAP FUNERAL SASH AND ARMBAND ATTRIBUTED TO GAULEITER JOSEF BURCKEL
Red rayon funeral sash, 112" x 9 1/2", with a 2 1/2" gold braided fringe at each end. The sash bears a sewn-on white rayon disk at one end, clamp-dyed with a black mobile swastika. At the opposite end of the sash is the gilt legend "Burckel, Gauleiter" beneath a national eagle. JOSEF BURCKEL (1895-1944) served as Gauleiter for Vienna and established the Central Agency for Jewish Emigration in Vienna to facilitate the expulsion of Jews from Austria and, later, their deportation to the concentration camps. The sash shows patchy fading overall, with some wear to the gilt inscription, and with the swastika disk partly detached, else very good. Also present is a red wool NSDAP armband attributed to Burckel and which accompanied the sash, 16" x 4 1/2", sewn at the ends, bearing a sewn-on white disk containing a sewn-on swastika of black ribbon. Also attached to the armband is a 1 1/4" dia. brass badge, depicting a swastika in the form of a rising sun, bearing the legend: "Gross Deutschland Volksabstimmung 10 April 1938 Ja" ("Greater Germany Referendum 10 April 1938 - Yes"), a souvenir of the plebiscite in which Austrian citizens approved annexation by Germany by a 99.73% vote. The swastika disk shows slight soiling, else very good.
