Description:

Fine lot of forty original photographs, each 5 3/4" x 3 3/4" b/w, presented as contact prints in pairs on twenty sheets of 8" x 9 3/4" photo paper. The images appear to depict a major NSDAP parade or other celebration in the Austrian town of Braunau am Inn, the birthplace of Adolf Hitler. Three images show gatherings and speeches being made in front of the apartment building in which Hitler was born, which in these images bears a sign naming it "Volksbucherei Braunau" ("People's Library Braunau"), indicating its use as a propaganda library and museum following its purchase by Martin Bormann in 1938. Additional images feature may views of the town's streets, thoroughly decorated with sculptures, flags, emblems, and a maypole honoring the NSDAP. Assemblies of Wehrmacht soldiers and Hitler Youth are also depicted, as is what appears to be a polling place, decorated with swastikas, banners, a national eagle and a portrait of Hitler. On the same sheet, a "Winterhilfswerk" memorial gives the date "1939/40", roughly dating the images to the period 1940-1945. A few images show numerical notations in the plate, but none bear any indication of the photographer's identity. All show slight bumps to the edges and slight surface wear, else very good.
