1156. JOSEPH NOURSE (1754-1841) The first Register of the Treasury. After serving as an aide to Charles Lee during the American Revolution, he settled in Philadelphia and was elected Register of the Treasury in 1781. He retained that position through six presidential administrations, retiring in 1829. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, July 17, 1823, to James Sheafe of Portsmouth, N.H. informing him that he has "...obtained an order of the Commissioners on Spanish Claims for time [?] until their Fall Session to obtain additional Papers in the Case of Bragdon Master of the Jane. Mr. [Daniel] Webster gives me to understand that measures... for the reconsideration of those important Cases of the Jane, the Apollo, & the Charlotte Murdoch... I perceive...some prospect of success..." With integral address leaf, addressed in his hand and bearing his franking signature.
