FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE (1820 - 1910) English nurse and hospital reformer, she headed a team of nurses in the Crimean War, and later founded the first institution for the training of nurses. "Notes on Nursing: What it is, and What it is Not", by Florence Nightingale (London: Harrison), n.d. (probably 1860), 79pp. 8vo., Nightingale's primer on nursing, intended to be used by both professionals and amateurs. It covers a wide range of considerations to be addressed by anyone attempting to nurse a sick person back to health, including bedding, ventilation, light, sanitation, noise, and a nurse's bedside manner. The book was very popular amongst both medical professionals and the reading public due to its accessibility and ease of use. Bound in soft brown cloth covers with gold embossed title. The binding is split at many points throughout the text and inside the front and back covers, but no pages are loose. Minor foxing throughout, else very good.
