Description:

NORTH VIETNAMESE BANNER CELEBRATES VICTORY AT QUANG TRI
Heavily embroidered North Vietnamese period red rayon banner fringed with gold cloth loops, 39 x 30 in., embroidered at top: 'National Liberation Front of South Vietnam'. At the center appears a gold embroidered star-shaped medal with multi-colored ribbon captioned at center: 'Medal of Honor', and at bottom appears the embroidered legend: 'Quang Tri Victory 1967'. A pole pocket is fitted at top so the the banner may be suspended horizontally. Very good. This victory flag no doubt refers at least in part to the 3d Marine Division assault on a series of enemy-controlled hills that dominated the approaches to their base at Khe Sanh. The battle lasted until May 11, 1967. In one of the bloodiest actions of the war, the Marines temporarily cleared the hills overlooking the combat base. Khe Sanh took on increasing importance as North Vietnam built up its forces in the region. U.S. commanders continued to insist upon holding it, and the North Vietnamese continued to harass and isolate the garrison into 1968.
