Very fine content A.D.S. "Henry Eaton Coleman" 1p. 4to., "Head Quarters Townesville Guards", Garysburg, N.C., May 13, 1861 certifying that "...I Henry Eaton Coleman Captain of the Townesville Guards, did in obedience to an Act of the General Assembly of North Carolina passed at its last session, cause the polls to be opened on the day stated above written at my camp for delegates to represent the county of Granville in the Coming [Secession] Convention of the people to assemble at the city of Raleigh on the 20th Inst. And the following is the result: viz: For A[braham] W[atkins] Venable III = 3 Tazewell [Lee] Hargrove III = 3 L. S. Royster...". On the verso Coleman adds an endorsement: "A true return of Polls held at Garysburg N. Carolina for members of the Convention by the Townsville Guards, May 13, 1861. Names 1. H Easton Coelman 2. Wm. H. Townes 3. T. H. Morrow". The Townsville Guards were raised in Granville County on April 26, 1861 and tendered its services to the state, which in turn sent the unit to the camp of instruction at Garysburg. The same day the named delegates voted in the secession convention of May 20, 1861 the unit was mustered into Confederate States service and left for Richmond on May 22. Delegate Abraham W. Venable (1799-1876) was a Virginia native and represented his North Carolina district in Congress from 1846 to 1852. He also served in the Provisional Confederate Congress. Tazewell Lee Hargrove (1830-1889) later served as an officer in the 44th N.C. Infantry and was captured during a skirmish at South Anna Bridge, Va., on June 26, 1863. Col. Henry E. Coleman served with the 12th N.C. and commanded the regiment as its colonel in May 1863 and saw action at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House. A fascinating document from the opening salvos of the war. Usual folds, else fine condition.
