NORMANDY AMERICAN CEMETERY
Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial information document, 4pp. 4to., 1956 (the year of its dedication), concerning the World War II American cemetery above Omaha Beach. Issued by 'THE AMERICAN BATTLE MONUMENTS COMMISSION', the packet has two maps of the D-Day beachheads and battlefields and show where the cemetery and monuments are located. The maps also show the location of a German cemetery behind Point Du Hoc and Omaha Beach. There is much written information about the landings and battles and it further indicates 9,386 American war dead are buried in the cemetery with 307 gravestones marking unknown soldiers, and that another approximately 14,000 American dead were returned home at the request of their next of kin. On the east side of the memorial is a memorial with the name, rank, organization and home state of 1,557 missing American soldiers. Also buried in the cemetery are a father and son buried side by side and in 33 other instances two brothers rest side by side. Folds, a light vertical toned line, else very good.
