Description:

NORMAN THOMAS
(1884 - 1968) American social reformer and politician, a founder of the A.C.L.U. and a Socialist candidate for the presidency. Good content T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, June 6, 1941. Thomas urges that non-violence be used to resist oppression, and cites the efforts of Mohandas Gandhi. He adds: "...I do not think, however, that Gandhi's technique can be slavishly followed in America. I do not like some of his points of view, for instance, the proper use of machinery... I myself am engaged in the immediate political fight... the pioneering that I spoke of... will have to be done, mostly, by your generation...". Sold with a program for the laying of the cornerstone of his father's Presbyterian Church in Marion, Oct. 17, 1893, signed on the cover by Thomas. Two pieces.
