NORMAN COTA
(1893 - 1971) American general heavily involved in the planning and execution of the Allied invasion of Normandy and the subsequent Battle of Normandy. He is famous for rallying demoralized troops on Omaha Beach on D-Day and personally leading their first successful breakout, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Rare, fine content T.L.S. ‘Norman D. Cota', 1p. 4to., Bryn Mawr, Oct. 7, 1963, on his personal letterhead. In part: ‘…Am returning herewith photograph to you [not included]…This photograph…shows General Sir Bernard Montgomery, who commanded the Ground Forces of the Normandy Invasion Forces at the time of our initial invasion, pinning the ‘Distinguished Service Order' (DSO) of the British Government on the undersigned. The medal was presented to me for distinguished service on Omaha Beach on D-Day June 6, 1944. The award was made in a field close to the beaches on July 7, 1944. The third officer…is an Officer from the First Army Headquarters reading a citation covering the award…I am happy to still be around to comply with your request to sign the photograph…'. Very good.
