Description:

1087. RICHARD M. NIXON (1913-1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Ironic T.L.S. with his typically-encircled initials "RN" as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Dec. 4, 1972 to Sen. George Murphy thanking the senator for a telegram sent upon Nixon's re-election the previous November 7th. He adds: "...Over the next four years I shall do everything I possibly can to make the kind of record which all Americans, regardless of party, can look back on with pride as we celebrate America's 200th Birthday on 1976..." Paperclip stain at top, else fine. Of course, Nixon's record over the next two years (let alone four) would be nothing to be proud of: he would resign in disgrace in 1974 following the Watergate break-in and ensuing revelations. $250-350
