NIXON - BREZHNEV 1972 MOSCOW SUMMIT GROUPING
Fine grouping of ephemera and relics from the historic Moscow Summit of 1972 between American President Richard M. Nixon and Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev held May 22–30, 1972. Includes: complete itinerary for the President and Mrs. Nixon, 22pp. 8vo., May, 1972, printed in the Soviet Union and in both languages; listing of the accommodations, telephone numbers and car numbers for the Moscow portion of the trip for the entire upper-level of the American contingent, 22pp. 8vo., in both languages and printed in the Soviet Union; printed menu for the dinner held at the American ambassador's residence, Spaso House, in Moscow, 1p. 8vo., May 26, 1972; hand-lettered placards probably from the American Ambassador's dinner, includes those for Mrs. Nixon, Henry Kissinger, Sec. of State William P. Rogers, Nikolai Podgorney, Alexei Kosygin, Fyodor Titov, and Kosygin's daughter, an 11" x 6" USSR table flag; a program for a command performance of "Swan Lake" by the Bolshoi, 12pp. 4to., May 25, 1972; two other Bolshoi publications; and four period matchbooks from Air Force One. All items are in fine condition. The Moscow Summit featured the signing of the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty, the first Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT I), an agreement leading to Apollo-Soyuz, and the U.S.–Soviet Incidents at Sea agreement. The summit is considered one of the hallmarks of détente. From the estate of Cmdr. Ronald L. Jackson (1928-1990). Jackson, a Navy officer, was tasked with supervising the planning and implementation of reciprocal state dinners, the operation of the White House Mess and food service at Camp David and aboard Air Force One, and travelled everywhere with Presidents Johnson through George H. Bush.
