Description:

NEZ PERCE INDIAN "STEPS"
A superb Bailey, Dix & Mead cabinet card of "Steps", listed on verso as No. 3 in their Fort Randall series of Sitting Bull's people. Steps was a Shoshone-Bannock Nez Perce captive who became loyal to Chief Joseph and fought at the Big Hole and Bear's Paw battles in 1877. After the Nez Perce War, Steps, then a refugee, found sanctuary with Sitting Bull's band in Canada and became a member of White Dog's family. This image shows the unfortunate man after having lost both feet and his right hand to frostbite in a snowstorm twenty years earlier. This cabinet card is immaculate, with the both the albumen and card being pristine. Scarce in such fine condition.
