NEWSPAPER REPORTS ON THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT MCKINLEY
Newspaper, ‘The Irish World', 12pp., New York, Sep. 14, 1901, the front page reports on the assassination of President McKinley, headline reading: ‘President McKinley. His Dastardly Assailant a Native of Michigan and a Resident of Ohio', also with an illustration of the assassin behind bars and his two guards. The article reads in part: ‘...Sept. 6, 1901...President McKinley was holding a public reception at the great Temple of Music on the Pan-American grounds...the blow of the assassin fell...At police headquarters is a medium sized man who listens with an air of assumed indifference to the persistent stream of questions, arguments, objurgations, and admonitions with which his captors seek to induce or compel him to talk...It was shortly after 4 p.m...He worked his way...until he was within two feet of the President...suddenly the sharp cracks of a revolver rang loud...three men threw themselves forward, and with one impulse sprang toward the would-be assassin...President McKinley, after the first shock of the assassin's shot, retreated a step, then, as the detectives leaped upon his assailant, he turned, walked steadily to a chair and seated himself...'. The story continues on page two, giving the statement from the assassin, Leon Czolgosz, in which he states ‘I am an anarchist. I am a disciple of Emma Goldman. Her words set me on fire'. The front page bears a second headline: ‘Land and People; The Boer Story of the War'. The front page is no longer attached, bearing significant tearing, and there are marginal tears throughout.
