NEWSPAPER REPORTS ON ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S FUNERAL TRAIN
A report on the funeral train for Abraham Lincoln as reported in the ‘Cleveland Morning Leader', 4pp., Cleveland, Ohio, April 26, 1865. In part: ‘...A constant stream of people have been passing through the room where the remains of the late President are...the rate of eighty per minute...the tops of every building along the route of the procession are occupied by anxious spectators...no vehicles in the procession...military are out in full force...One of the festoons in front of the City Hall took fire this morning, causing great excitement...chains around the space through which the procession was to pass in the park...The car was drawn by sixteen gray horses...All over the floor of the hearse, on which the coffin rested, were strewn most beautiful flowers...in Union Square...funeral oration was delivered by Hon. Geo. Bancroft...Heading the line were two divisions of State militia, including infantry, cavalry and artillery, besides a battalion of marines. Immediately following was the 7th Regiment, which has done guard duty since the arrival of the funeral cortege in this city...' Light marginal tears, else very good.
