Description:

Good lot of seven pieces of ephemera related to Ku Klux Klan activities in New Jersey, circa 1926. Includes: a printed newsletter, 4pp. 4to., Long Branch, New Jersey, April 1, 1926, the first number of a 'Special Bulletin' published by the 'Office of the Grand Dragon, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Realm of New Jersey'. The newsletter described the Klan structure in New Jersey shortly after its establishment, listing 84 communities in which Klans were established in March of 1926, advertising the first statewide Klan celebration in the 'Realm' of New Jersey, and a message from the 'Grand Dragon' of New Jersey, Arthur H. Bell, featuring the usual xenophobic rhetoric. Shows minor toning and foxing, else very good. WITH: a second printed newsletter, 4pp. 4to., Belmar, New Jersey, Nov. 1, 1926, the ninth number of an 'Official Document' published by the 'Office of the Grand Dragon, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Realm of New Jersey'. The newsletter contains reminders on Klan decorum for the fledgling state organization, as well as the typical xenophobic content, an essay on 'white supremacy' and a warning against spies within the Klan's ranks. Shows folds and some toning, else very good. WITH: typed letter (unsigned), 1p. 4to., Camden, Dec. 14, 1925, from the 'Kleagle' of Camden County, New Jersey, addressed 'To All Loyal Citizens of the Invisible Empire'. The 'Kleagle' (a Klan officer responsible for recruiting and public outreach) announces his efforts to weed out thieves, traitors, and the dishonorable from the ranks of the Camden County Klan, utilizing much flower Christian rhetoric. His facsimile signature appears at the conclusion. Shows folds, else very good. WITH: printed flyer, 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], featuring several advertisements for Klan related businesses, most notably the 'Klan Haven' Hotel in Belmar, New Jersey. Additional articles on the verso warn against traitors and aliens within the ranks of the Klan and feature details on their political programs. Torn into three pieces, repaired with archival tape. WITH: three copies of a 1p. 8vo. mimeographed schedule for Blackwood Klan No. 67 for dates in November and December of 1926, covering regular meetings and special events, most with the reminder 'Bring your robes'. All show folds and a chip to the bottom edge, else very good. Sold with several other non-Klan related articles of ephemera, including a 1p. 4to. partly-printed D.S., a bricklayer's apprenticeship form for an Earl E. Richard, from whose estate this and other Klan material offered in this sale originates.
