Description:

NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN
(1869 - 1940) British Prime Minister, 1937-40. An intriguing T.L.S., 1p. 4to., London, May 14, 1931 to Lord Beaverbrook (Max Aitken (1879-1964), 1st Baron Beaverbrook, a Canadian-British newspaper publisher. In part: '...Your letter of the 10% shows that it is no use our continuing this long-range correspondence...I, therefore, beg you to give me an opportunity of discussing the situation with you personally. Taylor has made things very difficult by issuing his circular. All the same, I think it should be possible to clean up the situation'. Chamberlain further adds that it is extremely difficult for him to leave London while the Finance Bill is being discussed, although explaining that if it is inconvenient for Beaverbrook to come to London he will instead come down to Cherkley, and concludes his letter: 'Do not let this small matter grow into a big one; remember that 'the cause is greater than the quarrel'...' A letter of good content and association. Two file holes to the left margin, not affecting the text or signature.
