Description:

NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN
(1869 - 1940) British Prime Minister best known for his foreign policy of appeasement, and in particular for his signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938. Fine content and association T.L.S., 1p. 4to., London, Mar. 23, 1931, to Chamberlain's ally and press baron MAX AITKEN, 1ST BARON BEAVERBROOK and annotated by Chamberlain: 'Personal & Private'. In full: 'There is now a lull in the storm; is not this a good opportunity to make contact again? If you would care for a talk some day this week, will you let me know what your movements are, and I will gladly see you here, or come to you if you prefer it...' Marginal file holes and very thin stains at top and bottom margins, else very good. Chamberlain and Beaverbrook, both Conservatives, had been actively involved in efforts to remove Stanley Baldwin as Leader of the Opposition. One such effort, to which Chamberlain clearly refers, was the 1931 Westminster St George's by-election and the election of Worthington-Evans. After the result was announced Duff Cooper said that his win had been 'a great victory for the true interest of the Conservative Party' and said the lesson to be learned was that in the future the party must 'stand together behind one leader'. The Conservative victory at the by-election was an important factor in Baldwin's retention of the Conservative Party leadership. Following the collapse later that year of the Labour Government, the Conservatives would unite with Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald to form the National Government, which enjoyed a landslide victory at the polls that autumn. Stanley Baldwin described the media barons who owned British newspapers (including Beaverbrook) as having 'Power without responsibility – the prerogative of the harlot throughout the ages.'
