Description:

NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN
(1869 - 1940) British Prime Minister best known for his foreign policy of appeasement, and in particular for his signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938. Fine content T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., [n.p. but London], May 14, 1931, to ‘The Right Hon. Lord Beaverbrook'. Max Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook (1879–1964), was a major backstage politician in the first part of the twentieth century. Beaverbrook used his publication, the Daily Express, which had the largest circulation in the world and appealed to conservative members of English working class, as a mouthpiece for patriotic news and editorials. In part: ‘…Taylor has not received the Whip because, as I told you, I had first of all to consult the people in South Paddington. It was only last night that I received a reply, and from its nature it is evident to me that the question of the Whip can only be settled simultaneously with a general settlement as to the future representation of the constituency…I hope you were pleased with Ashton. I think the result confirmed the view I expressed to you, that [Oswald] Mosley had no chance against the Labour machine. I feel satisfied myself that his votes were, to a large extent, drawn from other than Socialist sources…'. Mosley (1896–1980) founded the British Union of Fascists. He was imprisoned in 1940 and the BUF was banned. Light toning and chipping to top edge, file holes at left, otherwise very good.
