NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN
(1869 - 1940) British Prime Minister best known for his foreign policy of appeasement, and in particular for his signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938. Fine content T.L.S. as Prime Minister on "10 Downing Street" letterhead, 1p. 4to., London, October 19, 1938. Chamberlain writes a man in Northern Ireland only 19 days after signing the Munich Pact. Still basking in the public''s acclaim, Chamberlain thanks the man for his letter, adding: "...During these difficult and anxious times through which we have been passing the expressions of sympathy and goodwill which I have received from all quarters have been a source of great strength to me...". With transmittal envelope, fine. The Commons had discussed the Munich Agreement on October 3. Although Churchill spoke harshly against the pact, no Conservative voted against the government. Only between 20 and 30 abstained, including Churchill, Eden, Cooper and Harold Macmillan.
